BARÓN DE LEY MATURANA (Rioja)

The Barón de Ley Maturana, after twelve months in French barrels, exhibits a deep purple color with a high layer. Its nose is very ripe, refreshed by subtle minty tones on a cocoa background. On the palate it is warm, with silky tannins and intense minerality. Wide, elegant and with a persistent aftertaste that recalls the pepper aromas of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Maturana red with which this Barón de Ley is made is considered by some to be a «native» grape from La Rioja, recently rediscovered and rescued from oblivion. However, to be precise, we should call it Maturana Tinta de Navarrete, to distinguish it from Maturana Tinta, a grape widely spread on Spanish soil and that is actually the same as Verdejo Negro, Merenzao, Tintilla or Trousseau del Jura. . The grape with which this wine is made (the Maturana Tinta de Navarrete, also known as Castets) is a grape from the Carmenets family, to which the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère belong. It produces wines that are somewhat more intense than Cabernet Franc, with a lot of color and aromas that can easily be reminded of a Cabernet Sauvignon or Carmenère wine.
